Mathematical Reflections 1 pg 15
Big Idea:
Many important practical and mathematical applications involve comparing quantities of one kind or another; it is important to know which method to use and how we should use them.
Essential Question: What methods are there for comparing things?

1. Give an example like the ones on page 15.

Ratio: More people prefer Bolda Cola to Cola Nola by a ratio of 17,139 to 11,426.

Differences: 5,713 more people prefer Bolda Cola to Cola Nola.
Fractions: 3/5 of the students prefer TV to radio.
Percents: About 18% of the all the people who are 18-24 camp at least twice a year.
Scaling: About twice as many people who are 25-34 years old camp at least twice year compared to people who are 12-17.

2. What information do you get from a ratio comparison that you don’t get from a difference comparison?

In a ratio you get the data from both of the things that are being compared but from a difference you only basically get THE difference between the 2.

Summary: In this investigation we learned different ways to compare data. Also how the ratios are related to fractions in a way, and converting percent into decimals.
